SilkAir to fly to Cam Ranh Airport this weekend

by admin | post a comment

Singapore’s air carrier SilkAir looks set to operate its maiden flight to Cam Ranh on December 12 when this airport in the central province of Khanh Hoa is officially declared as an international one.

Ho Quoc Cuong, deputy director of the Air Transport Department under the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), said SilkAir had registered to use Airbus A319 for its first flight with some 118 passengers aboard this Saturday.

Cuong told the Daily on the phone on Tuesday that the flight would be conducted by SilkAir in collaboration the authorities of Cam Ranh Airport and the province to mark the official inauguration of this international airport.

However, Cuong said SilkAir had not applied for its frequent flights to Cam Ranh Airport as this carrier currently flies to Danang International Airport in close proximity. SilkAir is the only foreign operator of weekly flights to this airport in the central region.

Cuong said that CAAV had granted approval for TransAsia Airways to launch service to Danang Airport in the central coastal city from December 26. This Taiwan-based airline plans to use Airbus A321 and A320 configured with 182 and 150 seats respectively for its two weekly flights to Danang on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the initial time.

Asked about online news that a Russian airline would commence service between Vladivostock and Danang on December 12, Cuong said he had not heard about any application for this service.

Cuong explained relevant departments including immigration and customs were not well ready to serve international flights before this Saturday though the Minister of Transport had signed a decision to recognize the international status for Cam Ranh Airport.

Cam Ranh Airport has a new two-storey terminal in place and able to receive 800 passengers in a peak hour, including 200 international passengers. This VND200-billion terminal also has waiting areas for business and economy-class passengers, and other service facilities.

In July this year, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai signed a decision approving a master plan for Cam Ranh International Airport applicable until 2020 and with a vision till 2030. Total investment for this airport between now and 2030 is put at VND10.5 trillion (some US$563 million).

As planned for 2020, Cam Ranh Airport will have two runways for some 27 aircraft of different types including ATR72, Airbus A320, Boeing B767, B777 and B747F to land and take off in a peak hour.

Cam Ranh Airport is expected to receive 5.5 million passengers and 100,000 tons of cargo a year by 2020, and eight million passengers and 200,000 tons of cargo by 2030. The airport will be able to handle 37 airplanes by 2030.
