Thrill with motocross

Motocross is a form of motorcycle sport, with an aim to conquer rugged terrains and roads. And motocross favors those who love adventure and confronting challenges. Passing on winding and weaving alleys, even abominably rugged laps, is a thrilling experience and amazing taste for riders.

Motocross is derived from the French, and traces its origins to British scrambling competitions. The name “motocross” is a portmanteau derived from the words “Motorcycle” and “Cross Country.”

Motocross made its debut in Vietnam about 10 years ago and started to gain attention from local adventurers soon after, firstly in Hanoi. In HCMC, Con Cao Cao (grasshopper) Club is the professional club for motocross riders, attracting both foreigners and locals to exchange racing technique as well as to subdue challenging laps. The name of the club initiated from the shape of the motocross which looks like a grasshopper.

Hoan Nguyen, owner of the club, said, “We have 70 members, of which 20 are foreigners who are masters of motocross and hand over techniques to local riders.” To develop riding skills, every Saturday, the club organizes a maneuver in Dong Nai Province’s Nhon Trach district, passing endless rubber plantations. The most experienced and outstanding will lead the group and instruct others to surpass barrages.

Once every two months, the adventure club satisfies their exhilaration with a trans-forest ride, starting from Nam Cat Tien forest in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong and stopping by Buon Ma Thuot city in Daklak province. During the journey, the group almost lives in the forest. They only leave to go into town for more fuel or food.

“We even do not know what difficulties and challenges lie ahead, some sections are upright hillsides, some are morasses and some are zigzagging trails barricaded by groves. However it is, we, with great speed and agility as well as courage, overcome our fears and conquer stiff laps. All bring us intensively exciting and thrilling feelings,” said club member Vo Tam.

Some of them proudly show off that they become stronger after journeys. At first, they goggle and perspire with vertical hillsides and seem to flinch. After being encouraged and inspired, they gallop spectacularly.

Sometimes, the club journeys through the Truong Son Mountain Range. The challenges now are very tense with narrow alleys with mountains on one side and a valley on the other side. Sometimes the club is keen to conquer coastal areas with sand dunes or swamps and rivers or grass.

“Seen from afar, we seem to be flying over the sand dunes,” said Hoan Nguyen. “Rugged terrains require taking a risk but we always pulse up with nice gaps.”

Understanding clearly about the level of adventure of the sports game, riders always have a good preparation before upcoming journeys with specialized costumes, helmets and boots.

Adventurous but still safe. That is the attractive character of motocross. A motorcycle suitable for this sport is priced at US$1,000 to US$5,000. Enthusiasts of adventure can register to the club at 91/14 Tran Quang Dieu street in HCMC’s District 3.
