Caravelle publishes book about its 50-year history

by admin | post a comment

Caravelle Hotel
The history of the Caravelle Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City has come to light in a new book recounting a half-century of war and peace in Vietnam, as seen through the eyes as one of the city’s landmark institutions.

The English-language “Caravelle Saigon-A History,” published last week, unfolds as a straight narrative interspersed with fascinating stories from an array of diverse individuals whose lives intersected with the hotel.

While its most compelling sections detail the tumult of the 1960s and early 1970s, the book provides a fascinating glimpse into the development of the hospitality industry in Saigon and concludes with the hotel’s extensive refurbishment in 1998.

Built to be the country’s most luxurious hotel when opened in 1959, the five-star Caravelle became inseparable from both the journalistic luminaries who covered the Vietnam War and a new and progressive brand of war correspondents.

As Saigon’s unofficial press club, the Caravelle was frequented by policy makers and such media icons as Peter Arnett, Neil Sheehan, David Halberstam and Walter Cronkite.

It also housed the offices of a number of international press organizations during the war period such as the CBS News, the ABC News and The New York Times.

A Vietnamese edition will be published by the end of the year, according to a Caravelle statement.

Making memories at Om Beach in Phu Yen

by admin | post a comment

When thinking about a trip to relax and escape the noise and smoke of city life, people often think of a stunning beach where they can forget their troubles. For those who love tranquility, Om Beach, one of the nicest beaches of Xuan Dai Bay in Phu Yen province, is suggested as an ideal option.

Tourists relax on Om Beach in Phu Yen province.

There are two ways to reach Om Beach, by land and by waterway. For the first way, from the center of Tuy Hoa city, National Highway 1A leads to Song Cau Town. From there, ask a local the way to Vung La, a fishing village in Xuan Phuong commune.

By waterway, boats can be hired from local fishermen in Song Cau town or Nhat Tu Son town. The boat ride is about 90 minutes and should cost VND100,000 per hour for a four-seat boat and about VND1 million for a bigger one.

Drifting on the bay and indulging in the primitive surroundings is an amazing experience. Heading to the bay, tourists can learn about shrimp farming as this is home to many shrimp farms.

After riding the open ocean for around 90 minutes, the boat reaches the mouth of the bay where Om Beach lies gently waiting for tourists’ curiosity. Om Beach is actually two beaches separated by an isthmus. The front beach boasts soft sand and the back beach two hills.

There are no houses, residents or tourist services here, just the deserted beaches with their lines of coconut trees standing alone and listening to the waves crash onto the shore and the colorful coral forests that stop just below the surface of the ocean.

Snorkeling through the coral reef with the fish and basking in the tropical sun in this primitive landscape makes for unforgettable memories.
