Travel joint ventures allowed to bring tourists abroad

by admin | post a comment

From August 10, 2009 to December 31, 2010, travel joint ventures are allowed to provide outbound tours for Vietnamese citizens and foreigners who are living and working in Vietnam.

Under the current laws, foreign-invested travel firms can only take foreign tourists around Vietnam, while bringing tourists abroad is the ‘playing field’ of domestic travel firms only.

However, Vietnam will allow travel joint ventures to provide outbound tours during a set period, from August 10, 2009 to December 31, 2010. Vu The Binh, Head of the Travel Department under the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), said that it is now a difficult period for travel firms in the context of the global economic recession, therefore, VNAT has opened the door of the market, allowing travel joint ventures to undertake outbound tourism services.

In Circular No 498, VNAT stipulates that the management agency will have meetings with concerned agencies and travel firms every six months to review the operations of the firms.

Binh said that VNAT will also join forces with relevant agencies to inspect tours to discover and punish travel firms that violate the laws. Travel firms which provide outbound tours have to submit regular reports to VNAT every six months or make unscheduled reports to the agency when instructed.

VNAT has asked travel firms to strictly obey the current laws in providing outbound tours, including the regulations on purchasing insurance policies for tourists, sending tour guides along with delegations of tourists and signing contracts with foreign partners.

If travel firms commit violations in tourist management, VNAT could revoke firms’ right to take tourists abroad.

The decision will be valid until the end of 2010, after which a review of the operations will be carried out. After that, VNAT will send a report and make proposals to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Prime Minister on the next years’ plans.

Ambitious “HCM City – 100 interesting things”

by admin | post a comment

A tourism festival in HCM City.

To promote “HCM City – 100 interesting things” programme as a regional event and to attract foreign visitors to the city, the local tourism sector has called for the cooperation of tourism service providers and tourists.

The programme’s organizing board, which includes officials from the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Tourism Association and the Vinam Media Company, recently told the media that the programme will be kicked off in late August and last until the end of December.

Based on the opinions of domestic and foreign tourists, the organizing board will choose 100 interesting things about HCM City and advertise them on the media. Specifically, the board will select the top ten impressive hotels, the top ten Vietnamese restaurants, the top ten carriers, the top ten Vietnamese cuisines, the top ten Vietnamese specialties, the top ten destinations, the top ten shopping sites, the top ten tours, the top ten entertainment sites and the top ten outstanding events.

La Quoc Khanh, deputy director of the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that it will be difficult for the city to obtain its goals this year, due to many objective reasons, for instance the global economic crisis and A/H1N1 outbreak.

“HCM City – 100 interesting things” is considered an experimental “game” but the city is ambitious to turn it into a professional and international campaign.

The total funding for this programme is 2.7 billion dong (US$150,000), extracted from the fund for tourism promotion and HCM City’s budget.

Up to two thirds of the total funding will pay for advertising activities. The programme will be advertised at 40 big TV screens placed in the Tan Son Nhat International Airport and tourist destinations in HCM City, on posters, pamphlets, websites, books, DVDs and especially USB-sticks.

Khanh said around 2000 USB-sticks of four gigabyte containing information about HCM City and HCM City tourism will be sent to 1000 foreign travel agencies around the world.

A number of USB-sticks will be presented to 150 foreign travel agents participating in the International Tourism Exhibition of 2009 in HCM City this September.

The HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism signed a contract with Vietnam Airlines so that the Airline will advertise HCM City tourism on its international flights.

Madam Ton Nu Thi Ninh, former Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee and an advisor to the “HCM City – 100 interesting things”-campaign, said that this event is a break-through but the organizing board should always think forward and update some of the interesting things when they are no longer suitable.

Ninh also urged HCM City to campaign its people to build a good tourism environment. “Foreign tourists travel to HCM City to enjoy the sights, but they will leave the city if the tourism environment is poor,” Ninh said.

Cultural Centre in France prepares for Vietnam’s big anniversaries

The Vietnamese Cultural Centre in France is actively making preparations for upcoming big Vietnamese anniversaries, including the August 1945 Revolution and National Day (September 2) celebrations.

Now the centre is planning various activities to promote Vietnam’s landscape, people and culture to French people and the Vietnamese community in France.

It is cooperating with the Vietnamese Department of Fine Arts to display internationally acclaimed Vietnamese art works, which have been awarded at international competitions. It is also working with the Ministry of Information and Communications to hold an exhibition of books from Vietnam’s publishing houses and arrange conferences on the centre’s upcoming activities.

At the beginning of this year, the centre carried out a campaign to intensify advertising tourism in Vietnam, especially by sea and by air, said Pham Xuan Sinh, Director of the Centre.

In addition, the centre plans to show a series of films about the capital city of Hanoi on the occasion of its 1,000th anniversary in 2010 and a photo exhibition on Hanoi’s old quarter.

In the near future, a space dedicated to Vietnamese culture, offering a wide variety of newspapers, magazines and documents about the country, will be opened in the centre.

Saigon Beer welcomed at Int’l Beer Festival in Berlin

Vietnam’s Saigon Beer is on tap at the 13th International Beer Festival in Berlin, Germany on August 7-9.

The annual festival draws the participation of 300 beer firms coming from 86 countries worldwide. This year's event is the biggest festival of its kind in Germany since 1996.

To accompany the beer, the HM Sky Company is coordinating with the Vietnam Trade Promotion, Investment, Culture and Tourism Centre (VIETHaus AG) to serve up traditional dishes and offer up handicraft products at the festival.

Among 2,000 kinds of beer displayed in the event, Belgium is considered a stand out showcasing 12 beer firms in Berlin with high-grade suds such as cherry and St. Louis Kriek.

As usual, the 2009 Int’l Beer Festival is held along Karl Marx avenue in Berlin, divided into 21 areas. It includes open-air stages and a system of restaurants to attract millions of tourists from Germany and around the world.

The festival attracts crowds of Vietnamese living in Germany to taste Saigon Beer and traditional Vietnamese food, buy handicraft products and enjoy music shows performed by Vietnamese artists.

French organisation to help preserve Ha Long heritage sites

French voluntary organisation Solidarites Jeunesses Vietnam will begin a two-week campaign to preserve world heritage sites in Ha Long City next week.

Seven Vietnamese and one volunteer each from Canada, France, Germany and the Republic of Korea will clean up the beach, speak to local residents about the need to protect the environment, and consider measures to mitigate the adverse effects of economic and tourism development on the environment and people’s lives.

To be done in coordination with the Ha Long Bay Management Board, it is one of a dozen voluntary campaigns to preserve and popularise world heritage sites under the “World Heritage Volunteers: Patrimonito Rolls up the Sleeves” programme by UNESCO and Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service.

Solidaretes Jeunesses Vietnam has undertaken environmental and social activities in Vietnam since 2004.
